In this issue:·     2011 Preview·     New, White, Sand!·     Event Calendar·     January Birthdays – Free Gift!·     Joke of the Month                 Big River Golf Course709 Willamette AvenueUmatilla, OR 97882 Phone:(541) 922-3006 Fax:(541) 922-5311 E-mail:megan@golfbigriver.com Welcome to BRGC 2011…      Although the new year just started, there are many exciting things already underway.  Most importantly I would like to welcome all of our annual members, both returning and new, to another year at Big River!  We truly appreciate your support and we will do everything we can to make this the best season yet.      So far this winter Mother Nature hasn’t been as friendly towards us as in years past.  We will be open all winter as long as conditions allow.  You can golf, if you are brave enough, when the greens are frozen but not when they have frost.  If you would like to check the conditions before making the trip to the course you are welcome to call in the morning for the daily schedule.        During the snow days this winter we had time to remodel our ladies locker room.  It was in rough shape before but now the BRGC ladies will have a freshly textured and painted area for all your meeting and bulletin needs.        Our most exciting improvement this year will be….
Check out our New Arrival –57 Tons of Pure, White Sand!
The bunkers at BRGC have not had new sand in at least a decade and now will get the love they deserve.  We now have on hand 57 tons of the purest, white sand that is used in all the best courses in the Northwest.   According to Gunner Olsen, BRGC superintendent, this sand will be used in each of the bunkers on the front nine and #15, with the exclusion of the large bunker on #5.  Additional sand will be brought in at a later date to finish the bunkers on the back nine holes.  Once weather allows and the bunkers are able to be prepped, the dispersal of the sand will begin!  The sand, or lack thereof, in the bunkers has been an issue at the course for a very long time and we are very grateful that it can now be repaired.        To learn more about the new sand you will hopefully never have to play out of, read the following  from the manufacturer:UNIPAR ® bunker sands are produced from high quality quartz sands, and designed to provide ideal playing characteristics.  UNIPAR ® blends produced of highly angular silica sands will help solve the maintenance problems associated with steep faced bunkers, wind or water erosion and excessive rainfall, while offering players the highest penetrometer values for improved playability.  All UNIPAR bunker sands are designed to deliver excellent drainage without crusting, be physically compatible with the adjoining greens, and provide glare free color contrast to the surrounding turf.

Jokes of the month…

The Perfect Shot

A guy stood over his tee shot for what seemed an eternity, looking up, looking down, measuring the distance, figuring the wind direction and speed... driving his partner nuts.

Finally his exasperated partner says, "What the hell is taking so long" Hit the damned ball!"

The guy answers, "My wife is up there watching me from the clubhouse. I want to make this a perfect shot."

"Give me a break! You don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of hitting her from here."

Christmas Golf

Four old-timers were playing their weekly game of golf when one of them commented on how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning, roll out of bed - and without an argument, and go directly to the golf course to meet his buddies for 18 holes. All three of his friends unanimously agree, "Let's do it! We'll make it a priority, figure out a way and meet here early Christmas morning!"

A few weeks later its Christmas morning - and they are all standing next to each other on the first tee box. One friend exclaims "Boy this game cost me a fortune! I had to buy my wife such a huge diamond ring, she can't even take her eyes off it." Another friend says, "I spent a ton, too. My wife is at home planning the cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures." The third friend replies "Well, my wife is at home admiring her new car and reading the manual." Silence from the fourth guy.

The other three friends in the group look puzzled, while the final guy in the foursome is staring at them like they must have lost their minds. "I can't believe you all went to such an expense for a round of golf. I just woke up, slapped her on the butt and said, "Well babe, Merry Christmas! Golf or sex, what's it going to be" and she said "Take a sweater."
